Goal Zero Lighthouse 600 Review: Bright, Versatile, and Built to Last

The Goal Zero Lighthouse 600 has become my go-to camping lantern and emergency light source. I’ve put it through its paces on several camping trips and power outages, and it consistently delivers excellent performance.

Pros:

  • Brightness: The 600 lumens is genuinely bright enough to light up a campsite or a large room. The dimming feature allows you to adjust the brightness to conserve power when needed.
  • Versatile Charging Options: The built-in hand crank is a lifesaver when you’re off-grid and the battery is low. It also charges via USB, and can even act as a power bank to charge your phone. The solar charging option (sold separately) further enhances its versatility.
  • Durable Construction: The Lighthouse 600 feels incredibly well-built and robust. It’s clearly designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor use. I’ve accidentally knocked it over a few times, and it’s held up perfectly.
  • Directional Lighting: The ability to light up only half of the lantern (one side) is surprisingly useful. It allows you to conserve power and avoid blinding your neighbors in a campsite.
  • Compact and Lightweight: While not the smallest lantern on the market, the Lighthouse 600 is still relatively compact and lightweight, making it easy to pack.

Cons:

  • Price: The Lighthouse 600 is more expensive than many other camping lanterns. However, the build quality, features, and versatility justify the price in my opinion.
  • Hand Crank Effort: While the hand crank is a great feature, it does require some effort to generate a significant amount of power. Don’t expect to fully charge the lantern using the hand crank alone unless you’re prepared for a serious workout.

Overall:

The Goal Zero Lighthouse 600 is an excellent camping lantern that’s well worth the investment. Its brightness, versatility, durability, and charging options make it a top contender in its class. While the price is higher than some alternatives, the added features and build quality are definitely worth it for serious campers and anyone looking for a reliable emergency light source. I highly recommend it.
